What each status permits
When inactive is the right choice
More often than new licensees expect. If you passed the exam but are not ready to commit to a firm, taking the licence inactive protects the work you already did. Remember the clock that matters: you must apply within 3 months of your exam date or the fee doubles, and after 12 months the result expires entirely. Going inactive keeps the licence; waiting to apply does not.
How to activate
File a Sponsoring Broker Statement with the Commission once you have chosen a firm. Choosing a sponsoring broker covers what to ask before you do.
What still applies while inactive
Your renewal cycle, and the 25-hour post-license course in your first year of licensure. An inactive licence is not a paused licence, and the requirements that keep it valid keep running. Renewal and continuing education.
