How should you plan the 36 hours?

Nine hours per year is a simple pace. It is not an annual quota, but it prevents a four-year requirement from becoming a final-week emergency. Track total hours and the license-law category separately, because 36 total hours without the required category can still leave the record incomplete.

Effective July 1, 2025, the maintaining-license rule includes broker-education content for brokers. Brokers should check the current 18-hour broker-education provision rather than assuming every general CE course satisfies it.

What if a course certificate is missing from the GREC record?

Compare the certificate's name, license number, course code, completion date, and school with the online record.
Contact the approved school and ask it to correct or transmit the completion.
Allow the school's stated posting time, then recheck GREC.
Do not wait until the deadline to discover the discrepancy.

A certificate is valuable evidence, but the Commission record is the practical renewal checkpoint. Resolve posting errors before certifying the renewal.

Should you renew inactive if education is incomplete?

GREC's renewal guide recommends inactive renewal when required education will not be complete or posted by the deadline, to avoid a late fee. Inactive status does not permit ordinary brokerage. After the hours post, use the current Change Application and broker-affiliation process to activate.

Worked example

Sam's renewal is due August 31. On August 20, the record shows 33 hours, including the license-law course. A three-hour class was completed but has not posted.

Sam contacts the school immediately and monitors the GREC record. If the completion will not post by August 31, inactive renewal is safer than allowing the license to lapse. Sam performs no brokerage while inactive and activates only after the record and affiliation requirements are satisfied.
